 I was based in Arusha, a short flight from the Ngornogoro Crater. Afternoon in the hot season, it can be a pressure altitude of 9500ft. Not having this information has cost a number of visiting pilots their lives, and totalled aircraft. It is very decieving. Approach is down a long down slope towards the crater. I don't care if you have a 15kt tailwind. DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THIS! If you need to abort a landing from going long, not a big deal. You are still alive. Learn from that first approach and hit it again. If you miss it twice, you are probably in over your head. Not a problem. Deviate with a short flight to the alternate of Lake Manyara and land there according to the windsock. Busy area, keep your radio on. Take off at the Crater is even more important. Regardless if there is a tailwind, you only take off towards the crater. Even if you can't get out of ground effect, don't panic, just fly the ground effect over the cliff, dip down for free speed, and stay alive. Most private pilots do not have experience in these conditions and get caught out by the lack of performance with the thin air, and a piston engine. A number of visiting pilots have taken off into a headwind towards the hills which appear to have such a gentle long slope. Swallow that hook, and you will most likely die. Not enough performance to escape that slope attempting a 180. A number of planes have crashed on that slope with the throttle wide open....even "performance" planes. I believe this is the most magic place on earth to fly. Know your limits. If the Crater is on your bucket list, then maybe leave the plane in Arusha (3500ft msl tarmac long enough to land ATRs.) and organize vehicle for a tour of the Crater. Back to pick up your plane, and off you go to the Serengeti. Most forgiving strip in the Serengeti is Seronera. 1/4 click from a lodge.
