I'm really getting into studying VFR sectionals. I can see the victors, the vor's all the airports, etc. Specifically, I'm interested in planning a VFR flight from KGMU (downtown greenville, SC to Gatlinburg, TN). Once I take of, how to I get on the nearest victor. I see that v415 runs e-w just north of KGMU, then an intersection with a n-s victor up to sugarloaf VOR, then over to snowbird VOR, then onto KGkT? I'm just excited about actually going places once I get my ticket, and I want to be able to fly the victors and the vors to get there. I know it's old school now, with gps, and such, but I'm a hopeless purist. I want to be proficient at doing it the old way just in case something goes wrong with gps. Any help much appreciated.

If you have not started your ground school yet, I would recommend the "Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge". I think you can download it from the faa.gov website. One of the latter chapters covers navigation. It's chapter 15. Covers everything from dead reckoning to radio navigation. Or, you can also ask you flight instructor.

It looks to me like the best option would be to depart to the north, direct to Sugarloaf (SUG) V185 to Snowbird (SOT) direct GKT. That gets you up over the Snowbird MOA to the north.

Swifteagle, Certainly you should learn to comfortably fly the victor airways & navigate via VORs. Once you have mastered that, I recommend you fly direct, either by pilotage and/or dead reconing (if you don't want to use GPS. That's a lot shorter. Per the sectional, the floor of the Sugarloaf MOA is 11k', not a problem if you cruise @ 8.5k'. What is the plane in the pic? Too small to recognize. Mike

They are based upon very old radio navigation technology VOR which concentrates traffic by defining routes in the sky between a multitude of government maintained ground based radio transmitters. The airways are similar to an interstate system. The airways limit the airborne advantage of direct point to point travel capability and concentrate traffic into a defined line containing aircraft traveling in both directions separated by 1000′ altitude differences.
