I love this site. Is there a key to explain the different features that appear on all the maps?


It'd be really appreciated if there isn't. I know some of it is self explanatory, and I found the post to explain blue (RNAV - RNP) airways and black (old Jet/Victor navaid to navaid), but how about having it all in one place?

For instance, what do the different coloured weather stations signify? What are the numbers after a VOR stations frequency, and so on...

Go to the charts section ans select and choose the Miami sectionalchart, right side under.

Zoom out, and you can see the key and the explanations of the marks on the charts.

Not the most obvious place? Its the same place it is on every sectional chart. Skyvector is a digital sectional chart. I don't understand your statement.


There isn't a legend for the Hi and Lo charts for the rest of the world, and on those sectional charts there is no reference to the colour code of the weather stations as depicted by Skyvector.

So specifically I want to know if there is a difference between the diffent colours and symbols. The colours are magenta, green, red, blue etc, some are filled circles, some empty, some quarter full or quarter empty, some have a vertical line and so on. Are some perhaps AWOS and ASOS of different types like here - http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/weather/asos/?airportId=KJFK explained here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_airport_weather_station

The color indicates flight category and the fill indicates sky cover.


The color is controversial because the FAA is making the NWS swap the colors for VFR and MVFR. When the new aviationweather.gov becomes the current aviationweather.gov, we'll change our colors to match. 


So don't get too used to it, but today the colors mean:

Green - VFR

Blue - MVFR

Red - IFR

Magenta - LIFR
