Hello! I am a real-world and flight simulator pilot; long time user (excellent site!); first-time poster. I often encourage other flightsim users to use this site as a flight-planning and navigation resource... the tools available in the popular sim programs are inadequate for anyone interested in actually learning about pilotage and dead reckoning (or in the case of real-world pilots, practicing those skills), and the few sim-oriented flight-planning programs I've seen just don't properly simulate the experience of using flight computer, plotter, compass and clock to plan and execute a VFR flight the "correct" way. I use the charts available via SkyVector mostly to augment my flight simulation experience, using screencaps to either print out charts or to have charts available as pdfs in a kneeboard utility while flying in the sim (I don't have the need or the budget in the real world for a full set of charts, or a subscription, much as I'd prefer to always have a paper chart while flying VFR in the sim). I've gotten to the point where I am piecing entire sectionals together for this purpose, and this got me thinking I would like to share these compiled charts in pdf form (minus all SkyVector logos, ads, etc; just the chart images) with the flight simulator community, most likely via upload to Simviation.com (where I am a moderator). So far, there seems to be some interest in the sim community for such an add-on, and it would be interesting to see how many "magenta-line-followers" might rise to the challenge and add a new dimension to their hobby. It would also be a boon to real-world pilots who generally use flight sim programs for "enhanced chair flying", to keep those skills sharp or even "pre-fly" trips. But first I want to be sure this would be OK with SkyVector, particularly as regards mentioning the site in the credits. I would of course include a link to the site in the package, and all the appropriate disclaimers, etc. about use of the charts. Also, I am assuming there would be no licensing issue, as I would not be offering the actual files licensed to you folks, but compiled/edited screencaps... is that correct?

You are correct in part, the charts themselves have no copyright. The processed, converted, tiled and re-assembled charts on SkyVector are a derivative work which we assert copyright on. If you want charts free of copyright, you should go to naco.faa.gov and download the originals. They are very reasonably priced and you will avoid all of these issues. If you want to display snippets of charts or screenshots which you make from SkyVector.com, you may do so only non-commercially and with proper attribution to SkyVector as the copyright holder. If you need more clarification, feel free to email skyvector@gmail.com. But it sounds like you're doing more than just this, so I would again suggest you obtain the charts from the source. Best of luck! -dave

I neglected to mention that this is a non-commercial project... but I will see about obtaining the files from the source. Thanks for your response.
