METAR/TAF Pop-Outs
Currently the METAR/TAF data pops out in alt text on the weather icon. It appears almost immediately, obscuring the chart and it can get in the way of clicking on or near the area neat the weather icon. It might be worthwhile to nice that up a little. Have the weather data pop-out into a small modal window on a mouse-over delay. If that doesn't work, perhaps there could be an area off to the side of the chart window that could populate with interpreted METAR data on mouse-over.

Print just my Flight Plan
I would like to see the option to enter a flight plan and then maybe click a box that will put just that portion of the current chart on an 8.5X11 sheet. I would select portrait or landscape in my own page setup, or it could assume an orientation based upon the layout of the trip. What I would use this for, is my "flight packet". I create a packet before a flight that includes a navigation plan, flight plan, and an airport diagram of the destination airport. It would be very nice to have an excerpt from a chart to add to it. I would not assume that this would take the place of a real chart on my kneeboard but it would make future planning a snap by having this packet on file. I see that printable triptiks is in there, but this would not necessarily be a triptik. It would be a good thing to add to the triptik however if that is not already in the works. Just my thinking.

overlay with satellite photos
Dave, Truly excellent site! I'm a military helicopter pilot and your site is better than almost anything we have for CONUS planning. Any chance of allowing the user to overlay with satellite data like in Google maps? I find myself clicking back and forth between SV and Google maps if I am planning something where the helicopter will be landing at an other-than-airport site (mountain, SAR, parking lot, etc). Might be a very handy feature for anyone operating VFR at low altitude. Thanks again for your great work! Rick

VFR Corridor Charts
What about adding the VFR Corridor charts that are generally found on the back of the TAC charts. These are especially useful when navigating busy/complex airspace (e.g. LA, SF, SD)?

I remember when I first encountered Skyvector about 3-4 years ago...it sure has come a long way! The new features are excellent and I'm so glad to see someone providing this invaluable service, for absolutely free too!!! I work for a regional airline maintianing the LIDO (Lufthansa systems) aeronautical charts for our pilot group. I use this site on a regular basis for research and cross-checking against errors in our LIDO chart system. What attracts me to this site is the fact that it's so incredibly easy and simple to get a bulk of airport information. I also believe this site has an edge over AirNav because of the layout, user-friendly features, and direct access to FAA NACO charts at the click of a button. Don't get me wrong AirNav is great too, but I think Skyvector really has its stuff together. Since this is the features request section, I guess the only real request would be whether a download could be available for all the airport data, in an access database, for example. Other than that, the site is pretty much on its way to perfection.

New Features
I'd like to request these possible features. By the way, I love the site. I planned my first crosscountry using the previous version of SkyVector. I flew XS09 to DED and back, July 2009, in my kit-built SkyRanger. I went as soon as I flew off my 40 test hours! The new SkyVector is much nicer. Many apps have a Tools-->Options menu for saving favorite settings. I'd like to see such a menu and be able to set and keep these settings: 1) Be able to save and recall flight plans 2) Turn off "Show Weather" as the default 3) Invert mouse wheel zoom direction (see Google Earth for an example, not Google Maps) I always find myself spinning the wheel the opposite of the way I want to zoom. I wish Google Maps offered this option too. Your app already saves my last location and zoom setting so it seems these should be simple additions. Thanks. P.S. I buy my sectionals and other supplies from your sponsors. I hope they realize what a useful site you've provided for us. Keep up the good work!

I didn't realize until reading this thread that you could in put GPS coordinates or the VOR radial/distance numbers in the flight planning feature. I think it would be very helpful if, in addition to the help video, there was a list of input commands along with examples and short descriptions (like the GPS lat/long and SEA303030 example).

Allowing overlay with google maps api
Congrats on a really nice clean ui. As a helo driver now web developer person myself, i was looking at a safety management system web app. I started by allowing a R/W pilot to select a starting and ending point by lat/long or zip code and then it plotted that giving a quick bearing and distance, but overlayed the course on a google map with current weather metar stations marked on the map. A mouseover of any weather station gave current metar info (coded and decoded) from ADDS in an iframe and elevation data/station name on the marker itself. For my purposes, i was going to pull the weather data into the SMS decision tree. Anyway that's by the by. I showed it to my brother (an ems pilot) who then told me last nite about your site. Fantastic site. Ideas Maybe for the R/W guys and VFR F/W pilots you can give the option to overlay just using the google maps api which for off airport stuff would be more useful than perhaps even a chart for situational awareness. You wouldn't need all those uploads for images then because google gives a pretty good idea. It might be particularly useful in a mobile app where using gps sensor info from a phone you can obtain current location and then allow them to just enter lat long, zip code or partial address and get a very quick route plot and weather enroute with zoomable google maps to what ever detail they needed. From a R/W standpoint being able to use google hybrid view which gives me images of where im going and even a street view if i desire, just gives me better situational awareness. Selfish for us R/W guys maybe, but pretty useful none the less. Anyway your site is great and almost iphonesque in it's approach for use.

Dave, My wish list... 1. More general search in the search box. If there's a match (KOQN) then SkyVector should go to the airport as it does now. If there's no match (Brandywine) SkyVector should return a list of airports that include that name in their AF/D data and allow the user to choose the best match. As it stands now, if I don't know the identifier for a particular airport I have to go to another site and look it up, then return to SkyVector. I think the old version worked a bit as I'm describing it didn't it? 2. Display TFRs as red circles and display basics on mouseover. To me 'basics' means altitude, times in effect, and link for more info. 3. Automatically display next adjacent chart as the user pans the map. If you are panning south from Seattle along the coast Skyvector should be able to figure out what chart to display next. As the user pans to the bottom of Seattle, Klamath Falls should appear without action on the user's part. Continued panning south should display SFO, then LA. Love SkyVector. I use it all the time for our charter operation.

Why seamless
I don't understand why people like seamless aeronautical charts that are not computer drawn like how a gps one is. I've seen seamless charts in other places and it chops off information where charts are pieced together and the map projection gets changed and looks plain awful. It's useful I guess for quickly scanning areas where I might not be interested in whether information gets cut off like text or terrain information, but I definitely wouldn't choose those over complete chart pieces skyvector uses.

Seamless Chart integration
I don't understand why people are so anti-seamless chart integration. The FAA sectionals are all the same conic projection--so in theory, they should match up perfectly. Even if they didn't, I have strong faith that Skyvector could accomplish this. And if all else fails, giving the option of both single-chart viewing and integrated seamless chart viewing would be like having our cake and eating it too.

If skyvector can accomplish seamless charts that don't lose info that'd be really cool. I still feel that complete charts are better though. They were designed for the needs of us. Like another site mentioned that uses seamless charts, doing so meant that they had to distort the original map projection to something like how google maps would use so that it could be stitched up. They even said it's not approved for use in navigation and that great circle paths are lost. Thinking back to the flight school days and learning that flying a great circle path is approximate the shortest distance between two points at least I'd rather do nav with a complete chart because I'd be able to track a great circle path and fly efficiently. But then again, it's not like I could use skyvector in the air anyhow, but its nice to plan on charts the same way I'll see it when I look at one in the air. At the very least I definitely wouldn't rely on stitched charts for nav in the air like I've seen some pilots do, that is asking for trouble. But I digress.

'seamlessness' has a lot of disadvantages; let me just point out ONE: it isn't true that 'all sectionals are on the SAME conic projection'. Sectionals along a standard parallel are, but as you move north or south, the cone upon which the surface is projected will vary. Near the equator the projection cones are almost cylindrical, while at higher latitudes they become flatter and flatter. Picture a stack of lampshades, with their angles becoming shallower as you move north. Google Earth can have 'seamlessness' because the satellite maps are projected on a SPHERE; and they are slightly incorrect because GE treats the Earth as a perfect sphere, when it's really oblate; slightly flattened at the poles due to its rotation. Just my two cents . .

I'm one who likes seamless charts. I see one complication, though. With the individual charts you can scroll to the legend, SUA info., etc. Seamless charts would not have these. Perhaps more pull-downs to access this info?

I can see the seamless vs. complete charts issue is a contentious one, I guess I'll throw in my own two cents. I both like and dislike seamless charts depending on what my use is. I like it when I'm doing flight planning for flight simulation (which I do in the winter time to try and keep myself from getting too rusty come spring). With flight simulation it's fine for me, I don't even need the charts to be current even. But when I'm planning for a real flight I always use full charts whether here or my own paper charts. As another person on this board has said - stitched charts tends to cut out chunks of information at the bounds where they are connected. If I'm planning a vfr flight I don't want to come upon an area where I see an obstacle symbol but the height is cut off so I can't read it or in another case a textual alert box is on the map but is also truncated so again I can't read it either. It might or might not be important for my route but if I can't read it I don't know that so I still have to reference a full chart. I might as well just use the full chart without having to go back and forth. I also have a buddy at a FSDO in the southeast who I phoned up today and asked about the legality of seamless charts for planning/nav and he said point blank that if I ever use seamless charts and get into any situation where I'm being grilled by an inspector do not mention using it as it is likely to make them frown and dig even more. Knowing inspectors I wouldn't tell them anything they don't ask me first anyhow!

I just open the 'link' so you get the whole flight plan in a URL line, and then you can seve it in any text file.

For me it works great and is very light, txt files are just a few Ks.

Hats off to a great website ! You are doing a great job and continuing to improve. I would like to be able to use the website on my SmarPhone (Droid). It would be awesome to access your site from anywhere there is cell coverage. It is a great safety feature to have real time weather from even the smallest airport. This site is great- thank you. As a student pilot, I'm often asked to plan pilotage-only VFR flights from A to B. Sometimes it's pretty easy to choose visual checkpoints, but sometimes I find myself going to Google Maps satellite view so i can see how a particular spot will look from the air. It's proven invaluable. What I will do is right-click on a spot in SkyVector and copy the lat/lon from the popup that appears, then paste into Google Maps.. I will even go so far as to print out the satellite view of checkpoints I think might be more difficult to recognize and bringing them with me on flights. In any event, a quick way to either overlay satellite images or even right-click and select "see satellite view" to open a popup window that shows this exact spot would be a great help. -Steve

No seamless charts
Regarding seamless charts: I know it's in the works and I know some competitors already have them, but I would actually prefer NOT to have them. Reason: I often use the information printed on the rim of the charts. Not just the legends. There is so much important stuff printed there. Examples: instructions printed on the Terminal Area Charts on special flight rules etc, or the flight rules in special areas such as the Grand Canyon. It would be a real shame if that information would no longer be available. R.

Would love to see Charts stiched on Site
One of the drawbacks of using SkyVector (or any other chart-based system) to get the big picture of a long cross-country flight is that only one chart appears at a time. Would love the ability to see more than one chart when zoomed out. I know there are some stitching issues, but I'm hoping it can be done. Can you put it on your list? Thanks!

Skyvector Team, First off, thank you for what you do. I really enjoy the site. I'm in military flight training and this site has been a life saver. I would like to see a tool put in to draw arcs so we could create our own departures and course rules. For instance CBM180090010. This would drawn a 10 mile arc from R-180 to R-090 off of Columbus. Something like that. There may be a more proper way of coding that, but you get the picture. Thank you guys for everything! MA

Hide Plot Lines
It would be useful to be able to toggle the plotted course lines on and off. Though thin, they do sometimes obscure important pieces of information on the chart, and right now the only way to see under them is to move or delete them.

Lower tech request -- flight planning
LOVE SKYVECTOR! THANK YOU!!! I use it all the time and would be perfectly happy if you never changed a thing! I read through this string, and most of the guys are a bit more "high-tech" than I am at the moment. (One person asked for translated TAFs and Metars and I would suggest the "ADDS" website which provides translations and great weather stuff.) But MY only request might be -- as the owner/operator of a Cessna 150 with a standard panel -- would be in the flight planning, if you could input winds aloft and get an actual compass heading and groundspeed (for that altitude) in addition to the magnetic course. You already have TAS information -- and let's face it -- you've already spoiled us!! So may as well take it to the one last step and put the E6B folks out of the picture for good! (Just kidding about that -- E6B is a great tool to be able to use - and I've always loved mine!!)

Not having seen it on the list yet, I would like to add: -> Winds Aloft: Winds aloft are already available form NWS/NOASS and I think they could be easily integrated. It could also directly chew out the head/tail wind components (very basic trigonometry) and incorporate that in the time/distance calculation.

National planning charts
An easy solution to the seamless or map stitching might be to use the two national flight planning maps such as these: http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/productcatalog/planningcharts/US/ I would like to be able to show flight plans (I used it for history as well) to non-avialtion folks and this would help them with the "big picture". Great site. Tnx.

Multiple Charts
When I plan a flight route, sometimes it is on more than one chart at a time, i.e. L-29 and L-30. However, SkyVector will only display one chart at a time. It would be nice if more that one chart could be displayed seamlessly. Thanks.

Flight plan import/export (any format)
I see that others have requested this in the past, but it's been a while. I've written a web-based version of the typical navigation log spreadsheet (mainly for my own use for now -- I know that there are already dozens of these out there, albeit generally Windows-only). It would be lovely if I could populate it with output from my SkyVector flight plan. While SkyVector provides the true/magnetic course adjustments, it would be useful to include the variation in the export. Nothing fancy, just something along the lines of WAYPOINT,ID=id,TYPE={airport,vp,vortac,...},DESC=desc,LAT=lat,LON=lon COURSE:TC=true_course,MC=magnetic,VAR=variation,DIST=distance,DUNIT={nm,sm} WAYPOINT:... COURSE:... ... Of course, some fancy XML might be appropriate, but anything is better than nothing. -Scott

VOR radial interceptions
Last suggestion/request for the day... This one is a little tougher. I'd like to be able to determine where VOR radials intersect a course so I can add checkpoints. SkyVector currently allows you to add a waypoint by entering a code in the form <VOR><RAD><DST> (e.g., OSI090016 to specify 16 NM from OSI on the 090 radial). What I'd love to do is to be able to add a waypoint specified by:
  • One existing waypoints (specified by ID or its order in the flight plan)
  • A distance along the course to the next waypoint
  • A VOR
Perhaps a syntax such as: <id-or-order>#<DST><VOR> SkyVector would then determine the FROM course from that VOR at that point along the route and add a new waypoint to the flight plan that indicates what the correct radial is. For extra points, indicate the FROM course from the next-nearest VOR (as a backup)! -Scott

Feature Requests
In addition to the "#1. Seamless chart layer", would it be possible to have Google Maps as one of the chart buttons so that you can see an entire route? In other words, SFO - JFK won't show on the map other than one chart and then blank screen in other areas. It would be useful to have Google Maps Map View so that you could think about the best places to land on the way across country and then drag your route line to an area of interest and then you can switch back to the sectional to get specific. -- (--or the map of your choice (whatever's easier to implement and most appropriate for your site), yahoo, bing ----etc) --I see that one other user asked for Google Maps Sat View for flying ultralights. --Also, will you be showing TFR's in the future? Seamless charts, again...
As a runwayfinder refugee (like many others here, I assume), seamless charts are the thing I miss the most. I see that its being worked on, but that posting was in October 2009, so its been 2.5 years since it was declared top priority. I realize that its tough to wrap a spherical object with a series of flat rectangles, but Foreflight, XWing, and Runwayfinder all manage(d) to do it, so its got to be reasonably doable. Is there some possible way to get an 'almost' accurate rendition with less work? As an interim/stopgap measure, can I suggest that it would be nice if, when you clicked outside the perimeter of a particular map, it took you to the next map in that direction. This would be easier than pulling down from the charts globe, loading the new map, and then trying to figure out where the heck you are. As a newbie here, though, let me close by saying that I'm grateful you're out there, and I hope you're able to keep it up for a long time. -lr
