Light Beacons

Has anybody ever navigated by these beacons?

Enroute Charts at SkyVector.com

I'd love to hear more about them.

I've heard light beacons only
I've heard light beacons only exist in Montana. You can find them in the mountains, which means a lost hiker could use them. Not a bad idea. I've never used them becuase I'm here in So Cal, but it seems to me you would have to push forward a few times in order to glimpse them enroute from a cockpit.

BruceAir is posting here?! Wow now I know I'm in the right place.
The mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the great teacher demonstrates; it is the superior teacher that inspires.

Light Beacons
Check out the chart for night circuit procedures at CYKA (Kamloops, BC). You'll find it at page 4 of 6 in the linked pdf file. I used to live in Kamloops and did some intro flying there. It's a very narrow valley for pattern flying, thus the need for the six beacons on the hills. I had a nice view of the valley where I lived and could see most of the beacons at night. These are out-of-date charts used for sim flying, but they were derived from real-world ones. http://charts.ivao.ca/CAP2/CYKA.pdf David P.

Light beacons
The last airway beacon I remember was between Columbus NM and El Paso TX. It was half way between the two airports. Also interesting was the fact it was beside a railroad track on the Mexican border. Probably how it got serviced from the 1930s until I last saw it about 1963.
