What's new
Welcome to the new SkyVector.com We've been working hard to make this site the best its ever been. Some new features include: 1. Draggable lines and waypoints in flight plans. 2. Drag-to-reorder waypoints. 3. New Airport Pages with Communications data, Airport Diagrams, AF/D snippets, and the entire Terminal Procedures Publication (IFR charts) 4. Airport Pictures. Upload your own pictures of airports! 5. Link tool. Now its easy to share the map you're viewing with a friend, flight plan and all! 6. Really cool chart selector tool. Hover over the globe icon. Improvements include: 1. Better Math. Map projection uses WGS84 Ellipsoidal model of the earth. Flight planning uses T. Vincenty's Formulae. 2. Better Code. The map code has been completely re-written to support more browsers. Real IE8 support too! The list goes on, but those are the highlights. Have a look around and let me know what you think.

New version is cool
I have been using SkyVector since pretty much the beginning. The new version looks good so far. Someday it would be nice to have a version that was more iPhone friendly, but I know that isn't your highest priority right now. Daniel

Looks great
Another long-time user here....and I'll echo the iPhone comments from above :) Quick nitpick that I noticed - the time-zone drop down is ordered in a peculiar way. The top-level items are A-Z (countries, etc), but the second-level seem to be Z-A (look at America/ items for instance). Other than that - I registered and logged in with no problems. Love the draggable flight-plan lines! Brian

Issues noticed:
1) No way to find Hawaii charts in the beta in the pop up "chart" finder (Sectional/TAC/Helicopter...) 2) I can't actually find out how to get to the helicopter chart - clicking on one in the chart finder (Chicago or Detroit for example) just takes me to the TAC for that location
Dave
The Heli charts are not there
The Heli charts are not there yet, but will be. Check back soon. Some charts, like Hawaii, don't work with the chart selector. You can get there by typing in an airport ID or from links on the airport pages. We're working on getting the pacific enroute charts up, then we'll have a "Pacific" region to select.

I'll echo the iPhone. I use
I'll echo the iPhone. I use it quite a bit in my initial planning, but I realize it's a pain. And draggable stuff is great, especially for picking up radials.

Links
The custom map links currently don't work, as they link to skyvector.com instead of beta.skyvector.com, so when followed later, they just default to New York TAC. Otherwise the beta works fantastic.

You are correct. If you want
You are correct. If you want to test the links you need to edit the hostname to beta.skyvector.com Have fun and share it, but don't put any permanent links on the web to beta.skyvector.com, as this will go away when we cut over to the main site.

One thing that I found on a competitor site that I liked was the ability to toggle the regular google maps in as well. Sometimes that's an easier way to see roads or other things to help with navigation. And if there is anyway to ditch the zoom slider and use the mouse wheel, I would think that would be a great interface enhancement.

Wish List
Dave, It would be nice to see a new topic for suggested improvements, a wish list, so we can let you know what would be handy for this great website. The rubberbanding on the path is nice improvement. I enjoy doing my preliminary planning on Skyvector, but would like to export the flight plan to flight planning software or website such as the AOPA or EAA flight planner. Maybe your own? Even better is to have the ability to download the flight plan to a GPS flight plan file for loading into AvMap or Garmin GPS units.

love your site. best chart site on the web. new Bata looks grate. I try to click all adds possible in order to get you noticed. thanks for the hard work.

I'm glad you like the site,
I'm glad you like the site, but please don't click on the ads unless you're genuinely interested. More important than clicks is the site's Quality Score. Plus, the selection of ads is judged by the clicks, so we'll get better, more relevant ads by only clicking on the ones we're honestly interested in. Have fun!

METAR Buttons
The graphical METAR buttons look cool in 3d, but they are twice as hard to read as the originals. You should consider fixing this. A huge part of the instant gratification of your intuitive charts are the weather.
Dave
The change to the METAR Icons
The change to the METAR Icons wasn't made lightly. We found that while certain colors were easy to read against an IFR chart, the same color would be difficult to see on a VFR chart. We also found that the readibility changed depending on the zoom level. The biggest change to the icons was making them white-filled. We were very hesitant to do this because it would obscure more of the chart, especially at the larger scales. But, in the end, we feel that it was a great improvement on the VFR chart where the green VFR color would disappear against a towered airport's symbol. I welcome more comments on this subject. What to others think about the new METAR icons?

Route Lines
I am hooked on sky vector for my pre-planning. I rather liked the thin red route lines on the original, but I could get over it. When you create a route, the lines do not go directly to the center of the airport, but off to the side, connected to the metar symbols. This doesn't look very accurate. Maybe the symbols could go directly over the middle of the airport, or the lines could? Keep up the good work!
Dave
Line thickness, accuracy
The lines were made thicker so you could grab them and drag them. A trade-off, to be sure, but one we feel is well worth it. As best as we are able, we try to make the lines go exactly to an airport. You'll find that the cartographers take a lot of license when placing object markers on the chart. In this example you'll see that two points, KHQM and HQM appear off by a nautical mile, and two other points, KS12C and 43IG are spot on. The only thing to say about this is that the charts are wrong. For the most part, the accuracy with which we convert lat/lon to x/y has greatly improved. If you compare the old SkyVector to the new SkyVector you'll notice that we are much more precisely aligned to the chart.

RE: METAR icons
Because of the 3d effect the "pie chart" size has been reduced, and the white color does not differentiate well... not nearly as well as the original... any way to keep 3d and fill the pie chart to the edges? The white does not pick up as well as the green. Have you considered using the same (original) color and size, but just making the icon 3d. Just my opinion of course, but the new version of the icon greatly reduces its readability. Sorry about my tenacity, really like your product and just want to see it get better.

Love the Site
I've been using SkyVector for a while. Love it. Thanks for making the charts available online like this. It's really helpful for flight planning, especially for long cross-country trips.

Helicopter Charts
Just wanted to know that the status was on adding the helicopter charts? Its great to be able to overlay a helo chart with a sectional or ELA when building a flight plan in and around the major cities like NYC, Boston, and DC. Thanks, love the updates made in the Beta version.

Beta feeback
Overall I like the new version. One nit though. I noticed that when one selects a different map type the highlight does not change over to it.
