Airport / Facility Directory Changes

Some of you noticed that many airports in the northwest were missing the cutout of their A/F-D paragraph on the airport information page. This has now been fixed.

It looks like several changes are being phased in, and not all of them are good. The page size has changed and fonts are all new. The problem is, they no longer embed the fonts in the file. If your system has the correct font, you won't notice a thing. If your system has a similar font and is successful in "guessing" that it should use it, you probably won't notice it.

Here's what pdffonts reports on the old-style sw_108_9FEB2012.pdf

name type emb sub uni object ID
------------------------------------ ----------------- --- --- --- ---------
AIFAHA+TradeGothic-BoldCondTwenty Type 1C yes yes no 22 0
AIFAHB+FranklinGothic-Book Type 1C yes yes no 23 0
AIFAHC+Universal-GreekwithMathPi Type 1C yes yes no 24 0
AIFAHD+Helvetica Type 1C yes yes no 25 0
AIFAHE+Universal-NewswithCommPi Type 1C yes yes no 26 0
AIFAIF+NewsGothic-Bold Type 1C yes yes no 27 0
PODACJ+ArialRoundedMTBold TrueType yes yes no 3 0

Notice the all the 'yes's under 'emb'? That's a good thing.

Here's what pdffonts reports on new-style nw_188_9FEB12.pdf

name type emb sub uni object ID
------------------------------------ ----------------- --- --- --- ---------
NewsGothicBT-BoldCondensed TrueType no no no 33 0
NewsGothBT-RomanFAASpecial TrueType no no no 35 0
NewsGothicBT-Roman TrueType no no no 37 0

You can probably hunt around on the internet and find NewsGothicBT-BoldCondensed and NewsGothicBT-Roman, but I can promise you that you cannot find NewsGothBT-RomanFAASpecial.

Looks like they modified the font for some custom purpose, and then didn't embed it. I'm pretty sure what was modified was the zero to include a slash through it. In the old version of the PDF, they overprinted a "/" over any zero in the airport identifier. You noticed this if you tried to cut-and-paste an airport ID with a zero in it. K07 becomes K0/7.

I've emailed Aeronav and asked them to publish their special font, but they haven't responded yet. So I've put up the A/FD paragraphs as good as I can render them, but I suspect that more work is ahead of us as we deal with however they chose to fix this problem.

In the mean time, please be on the lookout for incorrectly cut-out A/FD paragraphs on our Airport Pages. The code was re-written from scratch so there is a good chance there's some all new bugs in there.

Also, if you open the PDF version and it looks funny, please send me a screenshot along with some details about your system.

Have fun up there!
