Anyone??! Or is it a dumb question? Thanks Ian

Colours of Airways
Ian, If you are looking at US VFR charts, the thin dark (grey or black) airways are Military routes. The blue ones are victor airways for civilian use.

Thanks George.......I was actually looking at "World Hi" where there appears to be (to me at least) no logical reasoning behind the different colours of the airways. I thought maybe it was to do with FIR boundaries and then again maybe it was to do with VOR routing as opposed to RNAV routing. I am still none the wiser! Ian

Colours of Airways
Ian, On the High altitude charts the blue "Q" airways are RNAV (GPS) high altitude routes. The black "J" airways are high altitude VOR routes On the Low altitude IFR charts the "T" airways are the RNAV(GPS) routes and in blue, whereas the "V" airways are black. On the VFR charts the V and T routes are the same color (faded blue). George

Airways

Victor airways blue controlled airspace brwn controlled millitary blue above 18000 29.92 ifr required blk jet routs Q-Rnav capable
Used for ifr direct rnav. No route no color uncontrolled airspace. Sectional differ from Ifr they do however show IFR civilian, millitary, restricted as well as transitional airspace IE controlled airspace due to IFR departures, Arrivals and keeps VFR traffic clear
Of decending IFR traffic for precision nonprecision approaches
