enroute winds

hello all,

just a new user here, i was just wondering when you plan a flight is it possible to enter the enroute winds somewhere manually? i couldnt find that option.

i notice there is some winds in the system already when you ask for a NAVLOG, how accurate are these winds and are they specific for the FL that you fly?

thanks for your help,

On winds...

Agree it would be helpful to go "NO WIND" on flight plans...let's see that option soon.

Thanks, Mike

Wind Data Source

The winds come from the 1/2 degree GFS product. We are working up upgrading to the 1/4 degree product.

They are interpolated in 4 dimensions, x,y,z and time, for your flight plan lat, lon, altitude, and time. If you have not entered an ETD, a value of 60 minutes from now is used as yoru starting time, then each sequential waypoint is timed based on estimated transit time.

We welcome as much real-world feedback we can get on the model's accuracy. If you're so inclined, we would be grateful for some pireps on how well the prediction matched your flight's data. We've made collection easy in the navlog, with blank spaces for ETO (estimated time over) in yellow, and the segments duration to be calculated in white.

It would be very useful if

It would be very useful if you could set the forecasted wind and not the actual. A no-wind calculation would be useful too.

SkyVector vs Winds Aloft

i've been on about three xc helicopter flights where i've used skyvector's wind prediction and it has been pretty accurate and agrees pretty closely with AWC winds aloft product. I am wondering right now though how winds according to skyvector for my proposed flight leg could be 215@24kts when winds aloft is forecasting 250@05kts. that's a pretty massive difference in direction and speed, especially direction. I am planning on KTTD-S12(Albany) with departure at 0330Z @ 2500 ft.

Useless winds aloft data

It looks like a flight planned for a date beyond the end of the available winds forecasts are all calculated with the last available forecast data.

If I plan a flight today (09-Dec-2016) I get different winds each day up through the 24th, but after that they all use the winds from the 24th. This is worse than useless. Several changes are needed:

  1. Don't use invalid data.
  2. Provide a means of obtaining a NO WIND plan for any date.
You can run a no-wind plan by

You can run a no-wind plan by entering 9900 for an ETD.

What I was looking for!

this is exactly what I was looking for on this thread!
