Error of 4 degrees?

I made for himself an unpleasant discovery: Is there such a significant error of 4 degrees? Who can explain this? Thanks.

It's not an error. VORs are

It's not an error. VORs are oriented to magnetic north, and the map is oriented to true north. The magnetic declination in that area is about 10 degrees east of north, which is why the 0 on that ring is about 10 degrees to the right of the top.

Along with "VORs are oriented to magnetic north, and the map is oriented to true north," VOR's are aligned with magnetic north at the time of the most recent calibration.  And since magnetic north is not a fixed point and drifts over time, if that most recent calibration was a long time ago, large differeces can develop (such as the one displayed here).

I need clarification on which is correct.


I know this is an old thread, but I was doing some research today and this thread deals closely to my issue.

So, in the above chart, which is correct: the 180° radial or the 184° heading? And is the 184° number based on the CIFP? I realize sectionals can be paper (how I learned to fly with), but why not digital rotate the VOR rose instead? Then both could be 184°? Or what am I totally missing?

Both are correct.

The chart makers cannot simply rotate the VOR rose when they create the chart.  The rose would then not line up with what the VOR is telling you.  If they rotated it, then (using the numbers you gave above), you might say, "I need to fly the 184° radial," when it's actually the VOR's 180° radial you're on.  Yes, you'd still make it to the VOR (if you were inbound), but you'd have to deviate slightly to get on the 184° radial you selected.  Outbound, it would be worse:  you'd be diverging from your intended path.

So both figures are actually correct.  It depends on what instrument you're using to navigate.
