SkyVector Releases MRMS Weather Radar Layer
SkyVector is proud to release MRMS Weather Radar Layer.
MRMS Weather Radar provides a clean, clear, and very recent picture of precipitation.
MRMS stands for Multi-Radar / Multi-Sensor
The Multi-Radar part means that data streams from multiple radar stations, be they NEXRAD WSR-88D’s or TDWR’s, are collected and combined to produce a product that’s better than a single station could do alone.
The Multi-Sensor part means that non-radar sources are used to further improve the accuracy of the radar data. In practice this means that surface observations like rain gauges are used to bias-correct the radar intensity levels.
The benefits are remarkable:
  • Superior Quality Control - This means removing non-precipitation artifacts like insects, dust, and wind turbines. Because these artifacts are reduced, SkyVector can show very light misty precip all the way down to the 5 dBZ level. Many other products simply discard this low level data because it is too noisy.
  • Faster Updates - MRMS produces a new image every 2 minutes. SkyVector is typically able to get that image to your screen 90-120 seconds after the data is snapshotted. Compare this to the 5-10 minute latency common on other aviation sites.
  • Accurate Intensity Levels - Because the radar echos are bias corrected, the intensity levels you see are meaningful and consistent. This means that at 20dBZ, which is considered “light rain”, you can expect to experience the same level of precipitation no matter when, where, or how that rain was detected.
Along with the new data, SkyVector is also providing the ability for its authenticated users to animate the radar products. A new control in the center bottom provides the ability to pause, scrub, and speed up the animation.
Currently, most users are able to animate 10, 6-minute frames covering the past hour. We are carefully rolling out 2-minute frames (30 frames) to select users as we measure the load on our servers and keep an eye on our bandwidth costs. If you would like to request the 30 frame version send an email to info@skyvector.com with your account information.
We want to hear from you. Let us know your thoughts and suggestions.
MRMS Radar Upgrade

What a great upgrade!  It should be very useful.  For some reason, I'm only seeing 51 minutes of the scan, not a huge problem though.  I would like to see a slower speed option (so I can watch developing systems and also better judge their speed/time of movement).  Thanks for adding this; I'll be using it a lot.

Satellite images now has a bad update

Before the recent change in the site it never showed a satellite image older than 5 minutes but now it can be out of date for about 42 minutes and never more in date more than 12 minutes, and that's a kickback :(

scale MRMS

What does the scale in the lower left hand corner represent please.

Weather Radar Scale

johnpro2,  it is the weather radar reflectivity scale measured in dbz (decibels relative to Z).  Standard dbz scale for weather radar...dark purple for example is a radar return that is very dense (high dbz of 65-70).

For example...blue may be drizzle/fog/smoke, green may be light rain, yellow moderate rain, red is heavy rain, purple may be hail...or something like that.

MRMS radar overlay

Good morning

in recent months I have been unable to overlay MRMS in Australia.  It was a brilliant and accurate feature however it now appears to not work.  Has this feature been deactivated in Australia, I note it is still functional in USA.

It has just been updated, and

It's not yet available in Spain, but you can click on Satellite IR4 under Layers.
