Weather (METARs) map pins
Do red pins mean IFR? All green means VFR? Is there a legend where I can see a key to these pins? Thanks
Map pins
very frustating to ask a question on a forum and get no reply. Not even from the moderator. Very disappointing, borderline unprofessional.
The colors represent a "best guess"
Deciding if an observation indicates a given flight category is something that only the PIC can decide. We have written parsing programs that attempt to give the pilot "Guidance" in understanding what a METAR is indicating. We have based our logic on the following industry standard classifications. http://aviationweather.gov/adds/metars/description_ifr.php Since many METARs are written by hand and may contain unexpected variations, the prudent aviator will never trust his safety to the computer-parsed classification of an observation. Ultimately, it is up to the Pilot In Command to decide if a given METAR represents a particular flight category.
Pin Colors
Thank you for your answer. It gives me the information I wanted to know. I realize the ultimate decision is up to the PIC, but I wasn't sure about the color codes and you've answered that. Thank you.
Weather legend
I must have missed the answer; all I saw was the disclaimer. I imagine it was quite a challenge to get the computer to assign colors to the METAR dots based on the content of the METAR, and I commend those who accomplished that. Now, understanding that the PIC has the responsibility to determine f the weather is right to fly in, what do the assigned colors indicate? Red = IFR? Green = VFR? Blue = ??? Green with white center = ???

The symbology is taken from
The symbology is taken from the standard for METAR Plots. http://aviationweather.gov/adds/metars/description_ifr.php

This is an important bit of information.  A legend on the map would be extremely helpful.  The link is not helpful since it's now a dead link. :(

METAR Symbols
Seems to me a VERY simple answer is needed, cause it has gotten too complex. I'll try: Magneta: Low IFR, Very bad. Red: IFR. Better than Magneta Blue: Low VFR. Fly at your own risk. See and be seen (of course) Green: VFR. As good as it's gonna get. Similar to 'nice day' White centers try to depict cloud cover. ADDS uses Octants; they are clearer (clear, few, scattered, broken, overcast). As always, PIC makes decision using best available data. These are just 'hints' of what to expect. It was probably VERY hard to code this, so don't complain. I hope this helps.
