We Love Pilots!
The story of the St. Clair County Airport began in 1966 when a parcel of land was purchased from Marlin Hugghins and designated an airport property. The runway, taxiway and airport grounds and facilities were completed the same year, and the opening was attended by then-Governor George Wallace. Over the years the airport has been home to several military reserve units, an EAA chapter and a Civil Air Patrol unit.
While it will always be a general aviation airport, the FAA has designated KPLR as a “reliever” airport for Birmingham. Even with its elevation to reliever status, the airport still supports a vibrant general and corporate aviation community. Current amenities include multiple sizes of hangars available for rent, a flight training school, aviation maintenance facilities and an avionics shop. With a new FBO and 24-hour AVGAS availability, improvements at the airport continue as implementation of its FAA Master Plan progresses.
