Sleepy airport but worth the visit
This quiet, neat airport seems to be a throw back to years gone by. My wife and I landed there to visit the battlefield for the day. Not more than 10 planes seemed to live and visit there with perhaps just one other visitor besides us. No one was in sight, at the radio or FBO station but we did manage to locate a young fellow in the new repair shop that has apparently just opened up. He was able to point us to a rest room which served its purpose. There is no taxiway except perhaps the grass but it looked too nice to use so backtaxi's are in order. On the previous day we had ordered a rental car from Enterprise and that turned out to be the best bargain of the day. They picked us up and dropped us off from their office which about 10 minutes away - very courteous service. The car was more than reasonable and we used it to get to the battlefield and back and put on all of maybe 20 miles on it. The Enterprise guy told us they don't get too many local airport rentals. Gettysburg is a very nice town with quaint shops and was somewhat larger than I had guessed. There are old homes in the town with bullet marks and cannon shells still in bricks. We just drove thru but figured a future stop just to visit just the town would be worthwhile. There is a restaurant near the airport and several in town but we didn't really have time to visit them. We grabbed a quick bite at the battlefield cafeteria. The battlefield itself is worth the visit and the 1890s panoramic painting is marvelous. We will be back.
Mogas
I recently landed at Gettysburg (W05) and found there is a gas station with a convenience store less than a 100 yards from the airport on Rt 30 east (right turn from the airport). They only have auto gas with ethanol in it which is what I need for my plane. I shall return to W05 again.
